Review
Set in North Borneo in the nineteenth century around the British white Rajahs, this novel first came to my attention in a small review in one of the Sunday papers, which described it as a masterpiece; otherwise it received scant press coverage. It is a first novel by an American woman. I read it and was astonished. It creates an entire world with authentic intensity in language so vibrant and rich that you never question its authority. Like Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude pbk £7.99 hbk £10.99, it follows the rise and decay of a world - in this case, that of a principality carved by a madcap with the unofficial support of the British government, to act as a trading outpost and buffer zone on the farthest fringe of the Empire. We all agreed that it was the best new novel of 1998. It also proved to be enjoyed the most by our customers.. - review by Johnny de Falbe
