ReviewBehind many a demesne wall in Ireland lie the remains of a forgotten garden: with the recent increase in general prosperity there is something of a garden renaissance, and several are now being restored. In this handsome volume, Mme Olda Fitzgerald, whose own garden at Glin Castle features, chooses from the whole island of Ireland twenty fertile examples, new, old or rediscovered. Though the photogaphs are excellent, this is more than merely a picture book: in her text the author takes the reader on an entertainingly informed guided tour of each garden. She uncovers the (often eccentric) histories behind them, and she is excellent on more practical aspects too, discussing planting strategies, unusual plants, and the architecture and statuary that complement the whole. - review by John Wyse Jackson (Seán) |
