Salmon Fishing In The YemenEditionsReviewA delightfully hilarious, ingenious, warm-hearted political and social satire. Hen-pecked husband and fisheries expert, Dr. Alfred Jones, reluctantly agrees to work on project to introduce salmon, and the sport of salmon-fishing, to the Yemen. The project is the brainchild of a maverick sheik who places an evangelical faith in fly-fishing, and its coordinator is a young woman whom Dr. Jones finds instantly attractive. He works diligently for a solution, under considerable pressure from Mandelson-esque government spin doctors who see Britain’s involvement in the enterprise leading to favourable headlines about improved relations with the Middle East. Both the protagonist and the reader are sceptical at first, but are drawn into believing that the impossible can be achieved. No synopsis can hope to do justice this wonderful novel, told artfully through emails, letters, diary entries and chat show transcripts. - review by Marzena Pogorzaly |
