Although expensive, this is a unique record of the extraordinary monasteries to be found in the top right hand corner of Romania. With their broad eaves and placid settings, they are utterly distinct from the Saxon churches described in Fortresses of Faith. Byzantine in feel, these buildings are covered – inside and out – with frescoes of Biblical scenes. Many are in a poor state now. The splendid colour photos in this book amount to a valuable record of a neglected phenomenon of European art. - review by Johnny de Falbe
