Fortresses Of Faith: A Pictorial History Of The Fortified Saxon Churches Of RomaniaEditionsReviewUnlike the pictures in Revelations of Byzantium, the photos here are in black and white – which makes perfect sense when you consider that the Moldavian monasteries are immensely colourful, whereas the romantic, forbidding Saxon churches and castles of Transylvania are monochrome. There is considerable overlap in this book with a section of Winds of Sorrow, but the pictures are large format in this book, and the analysis much more systematic. It is a fascinating record of a distinct culture whose people have now largely dispersed, but whose solid buildings are mostly still intact. - review by John de Falbe |
