Review
This was one of my son's favourite books when he was 4. Willy is a chimp who paints. There is a picture on each page, and every one is a variant on a well-known painting: there is Botticelli's Venus with a gorilla instead of Venus; Michelangelo with a gorilla instead of Adam; Edward Hopper; Ingres with gorillas instead of women in the Turkish baths… Mysterious pencil points and paintbrushes lurk in the pictures, and there are further layers of surprises that get revealed and explained at the end. The book is funny and clever, without being precious. Although it certainly needs an adult to point out its subtleties, there is plenty for a child to enjoy alone. It's the sort of children's book that makes you admire the author: it is neither patronising nor insulting, and a great deal of thought and humour has gone into it. - review by Johnny de Falbe
