Review
Set in New Zealand in the 1860s, this is a very traditional and enjoyable novel. It tells the story of Joseph Blackstone and his wife Harriet, who have emigrated to New Zealand soon after their marriage. They have taken his mother with them too. They settle in a remote spot where he builds a house, they plant crops, and wait for harvest and the rest of their lives. But it becomes apparent that all is not so straightforward. There is a ghost in his past; he does not want children; Harriet shows dangerous signs of independence… When Joseph finds a scrap of gold (‘colour’) on their land, the flimsy idyll starts to unravel and before long he goes off to join a gold rush.
Tremain is a wonderful storyteller. The atmosphere of New Zealand, the kind of lives lived by the Blackstones, the hardships and excitements – all these are clearly portrayed. The dénouement takes place in the goldfields, beyond the edge of the known world – morally, as well as physically – and it is sustained with tremendous energy. You believe everything you read, you want to know what happens next, and to find out who, if anyone, finds redemption. - review by Johnny de Falbe
