Review
What’s wrong with this book? OK, one of the central characters is a totally unbelievable Irish ‘rock’ singer, full of something which my colleague Stewart would no doubt put to excellent use in his garden - there is a bit too much blarney about Celtic mists etc. etc., which sounds utterly fake, and as for what passes for the lyrics to her ‘hit’ songs - let’s just say that she makes the BeeGees seem like the Brontës, and I’m not just talking pitch. But apart from these minor irritations, this is a thoroughly enjoyable book. The plot is juicy: a mutilated corpse is addressed to the Police Chief (working-class) and his trusty Lieutenant (Old Southern Family), and when another body turns up, it looks as though the famously crime-free town of Hillston, North Carolina has a maniac at large, and one who is determined to destroy the reputation of the Police Department. The policemen are likeable, the atmosphere is sinister, and, all in all, this is a first-rate thriller - which doesn’t turn out to be yet another sub-Patricia Cornwell serial-killer-by-numbers yawn, or yarn, if you prefer. - review by Dan Fenton |
