The Impatient GardenerEditionsReview
The first section of this new book by Gay Search is firmly in the style of the gospels according to Saints Alan, Charlie and Lawrence of current celebrity, with various options for planning patios, decks and terraces according to the latest trends, and although the principles she applies are sound enough, it is really when she turns her attentions to plants that she comes up trumps. Without breaking the bank, she suggests unusual plant associations in the short and the medium term, for year-round interest, in sun or shade, and in assorted spaces from a country wilderness with wild flowers and mown paths, to small urban jungles groaning with pots and rampant climbers. She doesn’t mention my favourite ‘quickie’ Cobaea scandens which in seven weeks hid the shocking advance of nearby red-brick houses until I could marshal my resources for a long-term solution. If they sprawl any further I’ll reach for Miss Search. - review by Stewart Grimshaw |
