Review

It is a good and simple idea.  Take 15 gardeners of distinction, let them talk about their own gardens and nominate one which has inspired them.  Add photographs by one of today’s leading photographers and “Hey Presto!”  Does it work?  Well, yes, it does rather.  Inevitably some are better than others.  Anne Swithinbank, of TV celebrity, chooses Kew Gardens as her lodestone which is a bit of a cop-out, and three of our grandest gardening gels provide essays which are more or less indistinguishable in style and content, as if there was only one generic lady gardener, a sort of Mirabel Hobhouse-Verey, who has dominated horticultural literature for the past 25 years.

On the whole the men fare much better.  Although I like neither his own plot nor the one which prompted it, John Brookes produces a fascinating account of the process of designing, from concept to completion, and Stephen Anderton reveals here more of an eclectic range than his newspaper articles hint at.  Perhaps best of all, Dan Pearson responds to the ravishing garden at Ninfa near Rome as his preferred Eden, and if his own garden doesn’t quite achieve the level of what is after all one of the wonders of the horticultural world, as the designer of the best Chelsea Show garden in over 30 years of regular visits (in my far-from-humble opinion) I suspect it one day will.

Vivian Russell’s photographs are outstanding and really do illustrate the arguments and idiosyncrasies of all the individual contributors.

What might have been a predictable read proves to be extremely entertaining. - review by Stewart Grimshaw
