 This is an extraordinary book by a maverick. Subtitled ‘Passion and Solitude on a Philippine Island’, it is the author’s account of the delights and difficulties of living alone in a hut on the fringes of the archipelago, spear-fishing for his food. Interwoven with the hymn to the sea and its creatures, and his description of fishing with and living near (across the strait) rural Philippinos, is his attempt to understand why, in his mid-forties, a public school-educated Englishman, born during WW 2, should find himself most comfortable in this situation. What is it about England, his own past, and the nature of modern life, that has driven him to it? Is it affectation, or genuine?
