The Adversary: A True Story Of Murder And DeceptionEditions
Review
The French journalist Emmanuel Carrère reconstructs the events leading up to the murders, through interviews with those concerned and with Romand himself. The result is a gripping story of a man who was unable to face up to himself and to his circumstances, with terrible consequences. One of the most astonishing aspects of the narrative is the willingness of those around Romand to accept all his lies at face value. Would we ourselves have known any better in the circumstances? There is nothing sensational about this book: it is a detached and highly disturbing account of a deeply flawed and clever person, who might – ultimately - be unknowable. - review by Dan Fenton |
