Review
In 1978, Annie Butts, a black woman suffering from Tourette Syndrome, is found dead in the street in Richmond where she lived. The police, together with the majority of her neighbours, assume that she had been drinking and had been hit by a lorry. Only one person, Mrs Ranelagh, appears to believe she was murdered. But no-one believes her, and after suffering a nervous breakdown, she and her husband move abroad. Twenty years later, they return to England, where the past is still alive…
This enjoyable tale of revenge, obsession and - perhaps - of justice, is given a modern gloss with its emphasis on police racism and abusive behaviour in families. But for all that, it is still a good old-fashioned murder mystery, even if at times it stretches the reader’s credulity. However, the gripping pace and a tigress of a heroine (whose first name we do not learn) mean that this book ranks with The Ice House
