The Great Libraries: From Antiquity To The RenaissanceEditionsReviewThis extraordinary book is a must for any serious bibliophile. Published by the Oak Knoll Press in association with the British Library, it is a thorough study of libraries in ancient Greece and Rome, Byzantium and the European Renaissance. It gives an account of the cultural and political factors which led to the formation of these great libraries, and to their survival or loss. There are also detailed studies of the development of individual libraries ranging from the Bodleian to the Vatican and the Library of the Oecumenical Patriarchate in the Phanar, Constantinople. Besides being a good scholarly work, it is thoroughly readable and sumptuously produced. There are hundreds of colour plates, while the paper and design is first rate. It is superb value. - review by Johnny de Falbe |
