David Geffen: A Biography Of New HollywoodEditions
Review
1. Always scream when you don’t get your own way. 2. Only tell the truth when absolutely necessary. 3. Always tell employees the exact opposite of what you are going to do. 4. When firing an employee, always be abusive. 5. Never tell anyone when you change your mind about something. Let them sue when they find out. 6. If things don’t go your way at a Board meeting, try physical assault. 7. Conduct a ruthless vendetta against anyone who slights you, even unintentionally. 8. So that your enemies and everyone else will forget a lifetime of the above, donate millions to charity, and befriend public figures whose integrity is beyond question, e.g. Bill Clinton. Can’t wait for the day that the subject comes to pay us a call at Sandoe's. I found this book absolutely riveting, and at times it made me laugh out loud. The story focuses mostly on Geffen's career rather than on his personal life, but there are choice moments reported - for example, when our tycoon yells at a boyfriend: "You are so inappropriate!" Of all the extraordinary things in this biography, that's the one I most want to believe - I just love what these people do to language. (Incidentally, if you’ve always been a bit confused on when to use ‘disinterested’ as opposed to ‘uninterested’ – don’t look to Mr King to sort it out for you.) - review by Dan Fenton |
