Review

Orchids represent one of the largest families of flowering plants with over 25,000 species occurring naturally and over 100,000 cultivated hybrids.  They range in size from the microscopic to a Borneo giant which can weigh more than half a ton and measure 40 feet in circumference, growing as an epiphyte high above the ground on rain forest trees. (Don't think about it!)

Passions run high in orchid circles.  The author's interest began as a plant-hunting mercenary but once captivated, he turned his gaze on the collectors of the exotic blooms and tells the vivid story of the world of international plant politics, with heroes and villains worthy of a James Bond novel.

From the Orinoco, via Kew and other more clandestine nurseries, to the peat bogs of Minnesota, this is a tale of orchid smugglers, dedicated preservationists and ice-cream makers; of corruption, murder and moths with 12" tongues.

It makes for a compelling, funny and provocative read. - review by Stewart Grimshaw
