Beth Chatto's Gravel GardenEditionsReview
Her chosen battleground on this occasion was a windswept car park, heavily compacted, in an area with the lowest rainfall in England, and this book charts her progress as she chooses the most reliable plants for the driest of sites, and explains how to produce a garden which will survive without watering even in times of drought, and, what's more, which will provide interest all year long. Apart from some coy chapter headings - 'High Summer's Gaudy Veil' is a particularly striking example - Chatto's style is appropriately dry, brisk and engaging. - review by Stewart Grimshaw |
