The stories in this collection are the ones you would expect - King Midas, Odysseus, Jason & the Golden Fleece, Atalanta’s Race, Orpheus & Eurydice, Prometheus etc… It is not news if I say that they are good stories, but McCaughrean’s retelling of them is excellent.  Her language is clear and straightforward, so that the stories are fresh and vivid.  Whether read aloud to a 4-year-old or given to a 10-year-old to read, they will be enjoyed.  Adults will also get pleasure from reading them aloud.

This book belongs to the same series as The Orchard Book of Fairy Tales hbk £12.99.  Like its fellows, it is attractively presented without being flashy.  There are illustrations on every page which are naive and colourful: they work very well.  First published in 1992, I can see no reason why this book should ever go out of print.  It is far and away the best presentation of the Greek myths for children. - review by Johnny de Falbe
