Review
It’s a very handsome volume, and, if you’re the kind of person who likes to shop not just at the Galeries Lafayette, then this is the book for you. There is no denying the charm of many of the places described and all the important details about the shops are listed (including how mail order is arranged). There is also an excellent index. The author refers disparagingly in her introduction to modern retail ‘morgues’; the shops she lists are as far away from that description as you could possibly imagine. After all, when in Venice, it’s awfully handy to know where to get locks for your gondola’s oars… - review by Dan Fenton |

All right – let’s get the confession out of the way first: John Sandoe’s is included in this volume about interesting and unusual shops in Europe, and the references are very flattering (cf. pages 146-7). Unfortunately, the exterior photo was taken at one of the rare moments when the shop was without window boxes – Stewart had whisked them away to prepare the new ones. (If you’ve ever caught sight of us carrying them downstairs - as we must - twice a year, then perhaps ‘whisk’ is not exactly the mot juste.)
