Review
One of the most acclaimed travel books in recent years, Midnight in Sicily deserves all its success. It manages to be both a serious investigation into the corruption and crime that vitiates Sicily and, at the same time, an appreciation of the history, art and food that make the island so enduringly appealing. It is not simply that he maintains a balance between the good and the bad which is in some way acceptable but rather that he shows how the two feed off one another. Like Colin Thubron’s books – In Siberia pbk £8.99, or Among The Russians pbk £7.99, for example – Robb’s work is indispensable for anyone travelling to the regions described and also a delight for interested persons staying at home. - review by Johnny de Falbe
