Review
The inclusion in the book of a rather quaint map reminds the reader of the 'Golden Age' detective novels - Agatha Christie often inserted a plan of the victim's study for our examination - and the setting in a peaceful English village is also a nod to the past. But don't be deceived: this engrossing tale of horrid doings by some pretty awful people is thoroughly modern, and a welcome change from gritty urban landscapes where everyone does crack (I speak only for Chelsea, of course) and speaks Mockney. In fact, this book could well make you defer the purchase of your dream country cottage.
More horrors from rural life are to be found in Minette Walters' first book (also a prizewinner), The Ice House
