For children of four and upwards - and adults - it brings the concept of the unreliable narrator (mainspring of so much contemporary fiction) to its logical conclusion: each new character to appear sits down at the typewriter and tells the story as it ought to be told, much to the disgust of the bear - after all, the book is supposed to be about him, isn't it?
