Despite some inconveniences caused by the Germans, the French did not stop designing furniture during the 1940s, and the period is now regarded as one of great importance for decorative art in France.  This splendidly produced book demonstrates why.  After a few general chapters, it offers short sections on the leading designers of the era: Leleu. Moreux, Süe, Royère, Terry, and of course Arbus, on whom there is another lavish monograph from the same publisher (André Arbus hbk £80: Architecte-Décorateur Des Années 40).  The pictures are excellent and there are lots of them.  (Text in French.) - review by Johnny de Falbe
