The first essay alone would justify the book. It is a long biographical piece on Leopold Labedz, who for 40 years edited a magazine called Survey, commenting mainly on East European affairs but concerning itself with abuses of political power throughout the world. It is a valuable window onto intellectual life in this period and a fitting tribute to a man who history should not forget. Other essays include Anna Maria Ortese on Neapolitan slums; a wonderful extract from a biography of Keats by Cortazar; Saramago’s Nobel lecture of 1998; short stories by James Salter, Javier Marias, Ken Saro-Wiwa and others.
