Baltic Light: Early Open-Air Painting In Denmark And North GermanyEditionsReviewThis book features 109 pictures by 36 artists from Denmark and the North of Germany, whose work was heavily influenced by their early travels to Rome and Paris. The style they made is distinctive and marvellous, whether the paintings are of landscapes or interiors, because they successfully captured the local light. There are short biographical notes on the artists and excellent introductory essays; the reproductions are of a very high standard. The exhibition for which this is the catalogue opened in Ottawa in October 1999. It moves to Germany and Denmark in 2000. For those of us who will not get to the exhibition, this book provides a valuable introduction to the work of a little-known and intriguing group of artists. - review by Johnny de Falbe |
