Nat Tate - An American Artist: 1928 -1960EditionsReviewThe painter Nat Tate burned almost all his work before jumping from the Staten Island Ferry in 1960. In 1998, some retrospective justice was done to this near-forgotten artist in this short monograph, where Boyd accords him his due importance among American Modernists. True or false? Perfectly judged in all its details, you could read this book - as many did, until it was exposed after the glitzy New York launch - as true. Because of the way in which it was published (by David Bowie’s company), it is not usually included in a list of is novels, but its lightness of touch should not be confused with frivolity: it is an exquisitely achieved work, and extremely funny. It is one of my favourite of Boyd’s books and should, I think, be regarded as his most original novel. - review by Johnny de Falbe |
