These delicious pen-portraits by Thackeray first appeared as 'Vanity Fair' was being serialised and they are very much in the vein of that great masterpiece.

The author reveals to us a selection of the species, the snob royal and aristocratic, snobs foreign, colonial and native, in country, town and club, and though the great satirist is always biting, his wit is invariably tempered by benevolence.
