Wild Shore: Life And Death With Nicaragua's Last Shark HuntersEditions
ReviewThe San Juan River in Nicaragua is the home of the bull shark. Having heard that this aggressive and unpredictable beast has been drastically overhunted, Marriott became curious about the declining culture surrounding the sharks and decided to see for himself. This book is presented as an account of his trip up the river. It emerges as a portrait of ruins: ruined culture, ruined people, ruined history, ruined economy, ruined ecology. As in his first book, The Lost Tribe, Marriott comes across as intrepid, if not foolhardy; and though his critical faculties remain constantly alert, he preserves a degree of humility which is appealing. Although it doesn’t make me want to start saving up for a family holiday in Nicaragua immediately, I found this excellent book grimly compelling - review by Johnny de Falbe |
