PalimpsestEditionsReviewThis supremely entertaining book made me laugh out loud when I first read it - and earned me even stranger looks than usual in the coffee-houses of the King's Road. Gore Vidal tells the story of the first forty years of his life with apparent candour, and a life-affirmingly bitchy tone which can sometimes shock you into laughing - especially when he talks of his own mother and her drinking. But it is so well put together, and the style so polished, that you will find yourself totally absorbed in the literary, political and showbiz world of post-war America. Jackie, JFK, Paul Newman, Truman Capote - all figure to a greater or lesser extent in this dazzling volume. You might not like Vidal, and you wouldn't necessarily want to meet him after reading this book - but you'll enjoy the few hours you spend in his company here. - review by Dan Fenton |
