Review
In this novel, Ruth Rendell displays the same skill in drawing character, and the same interest in the darker side of the mind, as her alter-ego Barbara Vine. Filmed not too long ago as La Cérémonie (yes, in French, just imagine!)this book is not a conventional mystery, but the chilling story of Eunice Parchman, an illiterate who murders the family for whom she keeps house. It is a compelling account of the cause and bloody effect when social disadvantage meets character defect.
I have to admit that I've never read the Inspector Wexford novels - I once saw ten minutes of an incredibly dreary TV adaptation which put me off for good - but this thriller, like another Rendell gem, The Keys To The Street
pbk £5.99, is a highly entertaining read. - review by Dan Fenton
