Albert Speer: His Battle With TruthEditionsReview
With this biography, Gitta Sereny tackles the question central to Speer's life as a Nazi: how much did he know about the Holocaust? More than the answer to this question, it'sthe way that the book is written which is so gripping: Sereny and Speer spent hours together talking and it's almost like reading a love story. Of course, Sereny admits that she finds Speer an attractive personality, which only adds to the complexity and richness of the book. In parallel, we learn the story of a similar 'love affair' between Hitler and Speer, which actually played a crucial part in the course of the Second World War. The intimate portrait the reader gets of Hitler, and of the circle around him, is unique within the wealth of literature on the Third Reich. - review by Dan Fenton |
