Review
This is the story of an official pillaging expedition sent by the British Admiralty against Spanish South America in 1740. The instructions were to raid settlements on the coasts of Chile and Peru and try to stir up a rebellion against the Spanish - and conclude by seizing the treasure galleon between Acapulco and Manila. Disease, shipwreck and scurvy killed off 75% of the crew and marines; all but one of the ships were scuttled. Yet, astonishingly, the Prize of All the Oceans was captured, and the treasure was shared out... Careful research, sober description and a lively sense of narrative make this an enthralling book, and links the bucanneering days of Drake etc with the scientific voyages of Cook etc. - review by John de Falbe
