Not well known in the UK, this is quite the best anthology of classic verse for children. The selections are made according to theme - holidays, seasons, animals, history etc, which produces surprising juxtapositions. There is a strong sense of personal involvement and of love for the written word, and the short, very personal commentaries are always illuminating and interesting. The traditional-style pictures are also wonderful. A delight for literate children and adults too, to refer back to again and again; a book that is really worth owning.  Age 4-100 - review by Johnny de Falbe
