Review
In this, the first of the wonderful Madeline stories, our plucky heroine is taken ill one night. “Afraid of a disaster”, Miss Clavel calls Dr Cohn who takes Madeline off to the hospital, where she “wakes up two hours later in a room full of flowers, with a crack in the ceiling that sometimes had the habit of looking like a rabbit.” Her appendix has been whipped out. And when the other girls from her school visit her, they all want a scar too… This is my favourite of the Madeline books because I love the pictures of the girls walking around Paris, and the disconsolate expression on their faces as they leave the hospital in the rain.
