This is an excellent general guide which includes biographies of both performers and composers, and explanations of styles and forms.  As well as putting the major works of each composer in context, the editors have made an interesting selection of recordings.  This is the ideal work of reference for those who have started to take an interest in classical music, but for whom the prospect of choosing from the vast number of recordings available today is rather daunting. - review by Dan Fenton
