Review

This is a technically demanding but hugely rewarding book.  Rosen charts the musical landscape of the 18th Century, and proceeds to discuss the development of classical music in Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.  Musical examples are quoted extensively; the parallels drawn are illuminating and fascinating.  For this new edition – complete with Rosen’s own solid recording of Beethoven’s Opp. 106 and 110 – Rosen responds to some of the points raised by his critics, and has written an entirely new chapter on the later Beethoven and, in particular, on Mozart’s legacy.  Despite a rather shocking (and repeated) confusion between K575 and K576, which I’m sure the publisher will correct for the next printing, this new material is a welcome addition to a work that is now a classic. - review by Dan Fenton
