The Blue FlowerEditionsReviewThis gem is based on the life of the German Romantic poet Novalis who, as a young graduate, became engaged to a 12-year-old girl who seemed to embody his ideals. Meaning is discovered by interpreting phenomena romantically, or aesthetically. Though I have never paused to unravel it, I am sure that there is great intellectual substance in this novel. For those do not care about such matters in fiction, it should be stressed that The Blue Flower is utterly delightful. It has Fitzgerald’s characteristic incisiveness - her ability to conjure a place or person with astonishingly few words - and her sense of fun. It seems so effortless, yet the satisfaction she gives is that of a weighty book. - review by Johnny de Falbe |
