In the angry 50's? In the cynical 90's? No - the answer is in 1932, when this masterpiece was first published. If Iles' cynicism seems modern, it's also worth remembering that the psychological thriller, which we often think of as a sophisticated re-invention of detective fiction by contemporary authors, was alive and well nearly seventy years ago.
