Review
Expelled from school in 1933, it seemed the obvious thing to the 19-year-old Leigh-Fermor to get a rucksack, board a boat to the Hook of Holland and start walking. But this is more than just a tale of picaresque wanderings (though it is that too): it is also a book of immense cultural and historical richness, the product of an astute and curious mind. If you want to know what pre-war Europe was like, read this book. Or if you just like travel books, they do not come better than this. First published in 1977, this volume takes us to a bridge on the Hungarian border; the second volume, Between the Woods and the Water pbk £9.99s, gets him through Romania; the third volume has still to be published. - review by Johnny de Falbe
