Travel or history, or biography… and, if biography, whose biography? Ostensibly, this is a book about Napoleon’s exile on St Helena. Well, it is about that. But what animates it, or rather what animates Napoleon, is the discreet biographical note informing us that the author was a hostage in Beirut for 3 years. Without ever referring directly to his own experiences, he seems to bring them to bear on his understanding of the Emperor’s predicament. This is an odd, subtle, moving book. - review by Johnny de Falbe
