Review
Probably the most important battle of the twentieth century, Stalingrad was also one of the most confused, drawn-out and deliberately obfuscated (by both sides). Hitler's advance was checked here, and the tide of the war turned. Hitler knew it, and threw all available resources into it; so did Stalin. And though the two sides were, in theory, ideological opposites, their fighting methods were similarly ruthless and dismissive of human life.
All the praise heaped on this book is justified. Using diaries, letters and the fruit of painstaking research, the complex events of this scarcely credible campaign are unfolded in a brilliant and harrowing narrative. It must rank as one of the best works of military history ever written. - review by Johnny de Falbe
