People Who Say Goodbye: Memories Of ChildhoodEditionsReviewThe author was five when the First World War broke out, and she was left with an abiding sense that those who said goodbye never returned... On the face of it, this is a humdrum memoir of growing up in South London when people had aunts called Ada and Ethel and doctors had two medicines for sick children, red or brown. But it is authentic and raw, not sentimental, and it is immensely funny. We recommended it to Dirk Bogarde when it came out, whose praise brought it to a deservedly wider audience. It is a classic of the genre. - review by Johnny de Falbe |
