Me - The Authorised BiographyEditionsReviewThis book was given to me by an esteemed customer with the words, ‘Now you have no excuse not to read it.’ The author is a veteran freelance journalist, bon viveur, biographer of J L Carr and R S Thomas, connoisseur of pubs; and Welsh. The latter is not intended as a racist slur, for this memoir is above all about growing up in Wales and what it is like to be Welsh. It begins with the extraordinary story of how he suddenly received a spate of erotic letters from women who had evidently had supremely enjoyable bouts in bed with him. Naturally he was curious to discover who the man was who had appropriated his identity. It also set him on a quest to clarify his own identity to himself. Like everyone else, Rogers has had his share of disappointments and setbacks but he is so engaging, humorous and wise that it’s hard not to feel, on finishing the book, that those of us who are not Welsh have missed out on something rather wonderful. This is one of those rare autobiographies that doesn’t just chronicle or justify the events of its author’s life but broadens our understanding of what it is to be alive. Do read it. - review by John de Falbe |
