Karen WadmanProfileIn 1986, Karen moved from Minnesota to London, where, upon completion of the necessary immigration and visa formalities, she immediately applied for an account at John Sandoe’s. A specialist in Browning and Henry James, Karen had been teaching at the University of Minnesota, and has carried on her work in London both in book-groups and with exchange students from St Mary’s College, San Antonio, Texas. Karen’s addiction to reading meant that she was always a frequent visitor to the shop – and when Perina left us at the end of 1995, we were thrilled to welcome a ‘token American’ (her phrase, honestly) on to the staff. We all like to think of ourselves as keen readers, but it has to be said that Mrs Wadman has truly amazed us both with the speed of her consumption and the variety of her interests. Calligraphy, however, is probably not among these, to judge from the sometimes impenetrable information she records in the Order book. Luckily, a few of our customers are old Bletchley hands. I remember one morning when Karen was still a customer, her saying to us that one of the reasons she loved coming to the shop was that it was ‘not sanitised’.
