Flora McDonnellProfileThis artist’s books for young children are the best I know, and they have been favourites with both my children. The pictures are bright and clear, but they are not the idiotic flat images to be found in so many books, as if the child cannot be expected to recognize, or be understand, anything with character. They do not patronize. A picture of a dog, or a boat, or an elephant in McDonnell’s work, is a real picture, with depth and fun. She is an artist. And they are fun for the parent as well as the child. As I write this, my 1-year-old son is standing impatiently by me brandishing ‘Splash!’ and ‘I Love Boats’ – for the umpteenth time. There are some books for this age that make you want to scream when you have to look at them again – and again… But these are a pleasure. Their large format feels generous, like the pictures themselves. Publications
