Stewart was a customer of the shop for many years [This is an authorised biography, incidentally - Ed.], before coming into the business when John Sandoe retired in 1989.

Previously he had pursued an unlikely career as a Chelsea restaurateur, following his migration [some would say ‘flight’] south from Glasgow, where he had studied botany at the University.  This experience later led to a keen interest in gardening, and the time spent in Glasgow contributed to an enduring enthusiasm for the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in particular, and for the arts and architecture in general.
