Dan FentonStaff ProfileI began work at John Sandoe’s in August 1993, and have now been here long enough to find the question “Are you new here?” quite irritating. But the shop is so dear to so many of our customers that I can understand why they feel it’s theirs. Moreover, the shop’s interior has changed so little - books are crammed in everywhere - that you could easily, and mistakenly, imagine that nothing has changed in all these years. I suppose I got the job because I knew the boss’s wife - Nell de Falbe and I met when we were students. I had previously had another career: as a banker, for a French merchant bank, first in the City of London, and then in Paris. You might wonder how a few years of working in a state-owned, loss-making bureaucracy could possibly be useful in the dynamic, forward-thinking institution we all know John Sandoe’s to be.
