William Boyd has said that he believes in an unwritten contract between author and reader: anyone prepared to spend the cover price on a novel should feel entitled to be entertained.  His own work amply fulfils his side of this bargain; he can be relied on to give good value.  His first novel, the hilarious A Good Man In Africa, was a triumphant success.  Instead of falling into the trap of trying to do the same thing again, he has tackled something new in each book.  What they all share is their exuberance, intelligence and humour.  He is a deeply sympathetic writer.
