Ludwig BemelmansProfileThe Madeline books are classics, in the same league as the Eloise books, or Katie Morag, with gorgeous full-page pictures. Each one begins “In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. In two straight lines they broke their bread and brushed their teeth and went to bed.” Our heroine is a plucky girl, aged about five, at boarding school with eleven almost identical girls, in the care of the dependable Miss Clavel. All the Madeline books are a delight to read aloud to a small girl: I have read all of them God knows how many times and still I happily read them again, which is more than can be said for most children’s books.
